Mildred Gore Stansbury

Mrs. Stansbury, originally from West Virginia, came to Harford County in 1947 as an English Teacher and Librarian at Havre de Grace Colored High School.  She later became an English teacher at Aberdeen High School until her retirement. Mrs. Stansbury was the first African-American elected to a political office in Harford County in 1964.  A strong and dynamic visionary, she was also inspirational in getting other African-Americans to run for political office in Harford County. She was known as a “pioneer” and “trail-blazer” in Harford County, and in 1997 was designated as a Harford County Living Treasure by the Harford County Government. 

Doris G. Carey

Mrs. Doris G. Carey was initiated into Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® at St. Paul’s College, Lawrence, Virginia in December 1960.  At present, she serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Hosanna Community House, Inc., the first Freedman’s school in Harford County.  She was also appointed by the Governor to serve as a Board of Trustee Member for Harford Community College.  She serves as secretary of the Joppa/Joppatowne Community Council and is a Life Member of the NAACP. In 2016, Mrs. Carey was inducted in the Harford County Public Schools Education Hall of Fame.

Mrs. Doris G. Carey was initiated into Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® at St. Paul’s College, Lawrence, Virginia in December 1960.  At present, she serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Hosanna Community House, Inc., the first Freedman’s school in Harford County.  She was also appointed by the Governor to serve as a Board of Trustee Member for Harford Community College.  She serves as secretary of the Joppa/Joppatowne Community Council and is a Life Member of the NAACP. In 2016, Mrs. Carey was inducted in the Harford County Public Schools Education Hall of Fame.

Sarah E. Roye

Mrs. Sara E. Roye graduated from Howard University, Washington, D.C. in 1923 where she became a member of the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.  She was a high school teacher in West Virginia for several years before moving to Havre de Grace, Maryland with her husband in 1930.  She joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church and served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Missionary Circle. Mrs. Roye was also a member of the United Choral Ensemble, the National Retired Teachers Association, Howard University Alumni, and the Peace and Harmony Council #1 of Baltimore, Maryland.
